If you're looking for a fruit that's sweet like a dessert, packed with energy, and wonderfully creamy, chikoo (also called sapota) is your go-to — an Indian classic that's soft, nourishing and perfect for growing babies.
When can babies eat chikoo (sapota)?
From 6 months onwards, once your baby has tried basic starter fruits like banana, apple and pear. Always choose ripe, soft chikoo and avoid the unripe, grainy ones.
Why chikoo (sapota) is great for babies
- Natural sugars and calories — an energy booster, great for underweight or fussy babies
- Vitamin A & C — supports vision and immunity
- Iron & folate — good for blood and brain health
- Fibre-rich with magnesium and potassium for bone strength
How to make chikoo (sapota) purée
Ingredients: 1 ripe chikoo (soft, brown, no cracks)
No cooking needed. Wash the chikoo and peel off the skin, then carefully remove all the seeds. Scoop out the soft pulp and mash or blend until smooth. Serve fresh — never cook or freeze chikoo, as it loses taste and texture.
1-2 tablespoons in the morning or midday.
3-4 tablespoons, mixed with grains or yogurt.
Tasty combos to try
- Chikoo + Banana — sweet and creamy
- Chikoo + Apple — an iron-rich duo
- Chikoo + Ragi porridge — a hearty breakfast
Safety tips
- Use only fully ripe chikoo — it should be soft when pressed
- Never serve with seeds or unripe pulp
- Avoid serving in the evening due to high sugar content
- Avoid if baby has diarrhea — it's high in sugar and fibre
