Navratri, Made Toddler-Friendly

Fasting-friendly ideas the whole family can share — adapted to your child's age and stage, not their fast.

During Navratri, many households shift to fasting-friendly ingredients — sabudana, singhare ka atta (water chestnut flour), kuttu (buckwheat), samak rice, and fresh fruit. The good news for parents of babies and toddlers: most of these ingredients are genuinely great baby foods too, so your little one can eat alongside the family without missing out on proper nutrition.

Important first:

Navratri-friendly foods for babies & toddlers

10+ months

🍚 Soft Sabudana Khichdi

Well-soaked sabudana (tapioca pearls) + mashed boiled potato + a little ghee

Cook soaked sabudana until fully soft and translucent, mash in boiled potato, and finish with a little ghee. Skip the usual peanuts and green chilli for a baby version, or introduce peanut separately first if it's already a known-safe food.

🥔 Easy energy and a familiar family-meal texture.

🌾 Singhare ka Atta (Water Chestnut Flour) Porridge

2 tbsp singhare ka atta + water or milk + a mashed banana (optional, for sweetness)

Cook singhare ka atta with water or milk on low heat, stirring continuously until it thickens into a smooth porridge. Stir in mashed banana for natural sweetness if desired.

🌰 A gluten-free grain alternative, gentle on digestion.

🍚 Samak Rice (Barnyard Millet) Khichdi

2 tbsp samak rice + a little grated bottle gourd or pumpkin + a tsp of ghee

Cook samak rice until soft with grated vegetable, mash to the right texture for your baby's age, and finish with ghee.

🌾 A light, easy-to-digest grain swap that's naturally soft when well-cooked.

🍎 Fruit & Yogurt Bowl

Any ripe seasonal fruit (banana, apple, pear) + plain full-fat yogurt (8M+)

Mash or finely chop soft fruit and mix with plain yogurt for older babies — a fasting-friendly, no-cook option that also works as a snack any day of the year.

🥛 Probiotics, calcium, and a naturally sweet, cooling combination.

A gentle reminder

It's easy to get swept up in the household's fasting routine, but your baby's or toddler's nutrition needs don't pause for Navratri. Keep offering regular meals, milk feeds, and snacks on their usual schedule — the fasting-friendly ingredients above just mean the family can cook one pot and adapt it for everyone at the table, including the littlest one.
